Free Movie Monday has started

Jump in and grab yourself a free DVD, Free Movie Monday has started over on the mothership!

Things to add to your Netflix queue

It’s Monday again, and you know the drill. We sort what’s coming out on DVD this week so you don’t have to, here’s what you might find interesting:

The Game Plan - Action stars all get to a point of their careers where they think they need to show their “softer” side, so they do a family movie. This time Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson tries to be a daddy to a cute 7-yr old that he didn’t know he had. Only watch this if you’re a huge fan of The Rock. I’ll be skipping it.

Saw IV - I was not a fan of this movie, and I won’t be watching the DVD. But, I’m in the minority here, so have at it!

Fatal Contact - Martial arts with a budget and seemingly typical storyline. I watched this last night and will report in with my review later today on the mothership.

That’s it, seems to be a really lame week for DVD’s. Time to take care of some back titles in your queue.

Good Luck Chuck

I just put up a review of Good Luck Chuck as promised earlier this week. I enjoyed the movie, though it was the DVD extras and it’s “unratedness” that got it that 4th star.

Good Luck ChuckThere was one thing I forgot to mention the review, the blurring in the sex matrix. Now I can understand Dane wanting his junk to be blurred out, and when a woman is in a position where you’d see all the pink parts, I can understand her wanting that blurred as well… but there were several instance of blurring that would have been nothing more than a flash of bush. This was the UNRATED version people, what’s the deal?! Is there some ratio of boobs to bush in that if you show 50 flashes of the pink puppies you’re not allowed to show anything else?

I’m guessing it was a contract issue with the actresses, they agreed to appear naked and show butt/boobs but nothing else, so they had no choice but to blur stuff out in the extras.

It’s still annoying though.

This weekend on the big screen

There are actually 2 movies for you to see this weekend, though most likely you’ll only be able to find one of them

Cloverfield is the obvious choice, and JC gave it a strong 4 star rating. He did have a few warnings for potiential viewers though, so be sure to read his review.

The less obvious choice is Teeth, and you might not have ever heard of it. Teeth is about a sexually budding teenage girl who discovers she has teeth in her vagina. Think on that for one moment. This has dark-horror-comedy written all over it and I really wish it were playing anywhere in the Atlanta area so I could go check it out. Expect a DVD release this spring.

Cloverfield gets 4 stars

Yep, as expected Cloverfield received a 4 star review from JC. His review is online, so go check it out.

cloverfield-17.jpgNormally I’m the one from the mothership who waits for a movie to hit DVD before seeing it, but I might just have to hit this one in theaters. Why? It’s that plot device.. what is it that made half they audience get pissed off? Sure, someone could tell me.. but what fun would that be. Nope, I think I’ll have to head to the gigaplex to see this one.

The Bank Job

We’re going to pretend that Jason Statham didn’t have anything to do with the recent Uwe Boll film, that must have been an android that was allergic to milk..

The Bank JobThe Bank Job has all the makings of an excellent movie. Good story, good cast, funny, some action, some sex, it really looks quite dandy. I don’t have any high quality pictures to share yet, but I’ll post them when I get them. I do have a good image of the poster, and the picture that’s on the poster. It’s not much, but it’s something.

Be sure to watch the trailer though, I’ll embed it after the break. Read more

Wrestling Week in Review for 1/11/2007

Those of you that don’t know who I am, my name is JC Edwards and I’m the resident “fanboy”, comic book movie, action flick aficionado, film critic of the MFG bunch. But, what some of you may not know about me, I was involved in the exciting world of Professional Wrestling for more than 10 years, and it’s a passion that still lives and breathes inside of me today. Each week I find myself watching the flagship shows of WWE RAW & TNA Impact, (ECW and Smackdown pretty much suck) and with each passing show I feel the need to comment on the current state of affairs in Sports Entertainment, more and more. I’ll be bringing my vast knowledge of the business along with some friendly insight into the whys and what’s the writer’s were thinking when they create a character or an angle that makes you the average viewer, or more importantly myself say WTF were they thinking! This week I’ll be covering the previous episode of TNA Impact from 1/10 and last nights RAW broadcast. Since this is a new weekly column we’ll gloss over the highlights and next week we can go deeper. I’m open to feedback and if you disagree with my evaluation of certain talent, feel free to bring it and we’ll debate all night long…. Whoooo!

Justice League of America on hold, thank you striking writers!

That’s not even sarcastic, I sincerely thank the writers for not being there to work on this movie.

justiceleague.jpgThis was supposed top be a “special effects extravaganza” and a really big deal for Warner Bros., but look at who they cast for it:

Can you possibly take this seriously? How many of those names to you know? Do you think “Common” is a typo on my part?

Maybe I’m wrong, and maybe it’ll eventually be made and we’ll all just love it. But I have serious doubts about this one, serious doubts.

Doomsday pictures

I have mixed feelings regarding Doomsday, the upcoming film from Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers.) Here’s the story as presented by the press release:

DoomsdayIn the action-packed new thriller DOOMSDAY … authorities brutally quarantine a country as it succumbs to fear and chaos when a virus strikes.  The literal walling-off works for three decades—until the dreaded Reaper virus violently resurfaces in a major city.

An elite group of specialists, captained by Eden Sinclair (Rhona Mitra), is urgently dispatched into the still-quarantined country to retrieve a cure by any means necessary.  Shut off from the rest of the world, the unit must battle through a landscape that has become a waking nightmare.

Typical end-of-the-world stuff here, with sets, vehicles and people decked out like extras from Mad Max. The trailer looks ok, nothing in it that makes me afraid to plop down my $10 for a seat, but take a close look at the picture above. Yes, those are skeletons strapped onto the motorcycles, and they look like something they picked up from a Party City on November 1st. That’s raising all kinds of warning flags in my head.

Still, it might not totally suck, and there’s several interesting pictures in this first batch to be released. Especially #2, which I normally would have featured prominently.. but then I noticed those skeletons.

Doomsday is set to be released on March 14, 2008.

Cloverfield is getting a good review

JC attended a screening of Cloverfield last night and I was able to pry a little bit of information from him. First and foremost, he liked it… he liked it a lot. Odds are it’s getting a 4 star rating.

cloverfield-24.jpgWhy not a full 5? I’m not sure, but it has to do with a plot device that was a bit too convenient and/or contrived.

I can also confirm that the monster gets lots of screen time, but not what the monster looks like. JC is keeping mum on that subject.
