Iron Man trailer during Superbowl

When you’re watching the game Sunday night, keep your eyes open for the new trailer for Iron Man.

Iron ManThis is a screen grab from the trailer that shows Tony Stark testing out some of the tech going into his suit.

I was never an Iron Man fan growing up, so I know virtually nothing about the character (and yes, I know I can wiki it if I want to know) but the previews I’ve seen look like it’ll be a kick ass movie.

Nightmare Detective incoming

The Dimension Extreme label has had several winners, we enjoyed Broken and Dirty Sanchez quite a bit, so by default we now say yes when offered screeners from that label.

Nightmare DetectiveStill, the description and pictures from their latest offering has us wondering.

Investigating a rash of mysterious suicides, a female detective finds a curious link between the deaths: each of the victims had dialed ‘O’ on their cell phones almost immediately before taking their own lives. As she discovers more about the bizarre deaths and their chilling connection, the young cop enlists the aid of a fellow detective who shares the killer’s ability to enter people’s dreams… but she soon realizes that she must face her own fears if she is to prevent further murders.

Yeah…

But still, Dimension Extreme deserves the benefit of the doubt, so I’ll take a look at it as soon as it arrives.

Nightmare Detective releases on DVD February 19th. More pictures after the break.

Mythbusters puts a plane on a treadmill

There’s an argument that’s been floating around for awhile now that goes something like this: If you put an airplane on a treadmill and set it so the speed of the treadmill increased as the plane tries to gain speed, would the plane stand still, and if so, would it take off.

MythbustersThe answer to this seems pretty obvious to me, but apparently there’s people on both sides of the argument.

Tonight on Discovery the Mythbusters will be putting this to rest once and for all as they’ve build a big ass treadmill and will be trying this out. I can hardly wait to see the losing side of the argument try to find fault with the testing process, because some people will never admit they are wrong.

HD-DVD ad during the Superbowl

Isn’t it fun to watch a company refuse to admit it lost a battle? No? You’re right, it’s just pathetic.

Apparently Toshiba has just paid $2.7 million bucks to place an ad for HD-DVD in this Sunday’s Superbowl. Toshiba has been cutting prices of it’s players and convincing others to drop the price of their players as well (most likely paying them the difference in cost to get them to play ball.) The ploy is obvious.. HD-DVD is considerably cheaper than Blu-ray at this point and Toshiba hopes it can turn it’s fortune around in the HD battles.

What they are ignoring is the obvious, consumers could care less what format wins as the picture quality and sound are identical, what consumers care about is selection. Come this summer when folks are looking to upgrade their players to HD, they’re going to notice that the movies they want to see are available in Blu-ray and not HD-DVD. It doesn’t matter if the HD-DVD players were on a Wal-mart endcap at $49.95, if there’s nothing to play on it it just doesn’t matter.

Toshiba lost this battle, now they’re just throwing good money after bad.

Hopefully the commercial will be funny though, I hate serious Superbowl commercials.

Update: Apparently Toshiba couldn’t get their act together in time to get the ad aired. I wonder if they got a refund?

The Appeal by John Grisham

I used to read all of Grisham’s books as he released them, then I read The Chamber.. and swore off his works due to the CRAPPY ending.

The Appeal by John GrishamI’ll admit though, the excerpt from this one looks interesting.

The jury was ready.

After forty-two hours of deliberations that followed seventy-one days of trial that included 530 hours of testimony from four dozen witnesses, and after a lifetime of sitting silently as the lawyers haggled and the judge lectured and the spectators watched like hawks for telltale signs, the jury was ready. Locked away in the jury room, secluded and secure, ten of them proudly signed their names to the verdict while the other two pouted in their corners, detached and miserable in their dissension. There were hugs and smiles and no small measure of self-congratulation because they had survived this little war and could now march proudly back into the arena with a decision they had rescued through sheer determination and the dogged pursuit of compromise. Their ordeal was over; their civic duty complete. They had served above and beyond. They were ready.

The foreman knocked on the door and rustled Uncle Joe from his slumbers. Uncle Joe, the ancient bailiff, had guarded them while he also arranged their meals, heard their complaints, and quietly slipped their messages to the judge. In his younger years, back when his hearing was better, Uncle Joe was rumored to also eavesdrop on his juries through a flimsy pine door he and he alone had selected and installed. But his listening days were over, and, as he had conceded to no one but his wife, after the ordeal of this particular trial he might just hang up his old pistol once and for all. The strain of controlling justice was wearing him down.

That doesn’t really give you a clue what the book is about though, only that Mr. Grisham knows how to write. This one is about a rich guy buying a seat on the Mississippi Supreme Court so he can get a verdict overturned. He does it by recruiting a candidate, financing his bid and apparently getting something other than money over his head so he’ll do what he’s told. Might be interesting, but I’m not sure I’m gonna break my ban to read it.

The Eye

It’s a slow news day, so I’m going to post a couple of high rez pictures from The Eye, the only “guy” movie being released this week.

The EyeDon’t get excited, it’s not Jessica Alba naked or anything like that.

The Eye is another rehash of the idea of Person A getting an organ transplant from dead Person B, then Person A starts to either 1) gain new abilities of a magical/super/spiritual persuasion or 2) lose control of that body part for periods of time where said body part does it’s own thing, usually evil.

It’s a PG-13 horror movie, and as a general rule I HATE PG-13 horror movies. No real violence, no nudity, very little blood, not enough f-bombs (thus no really amusing dialogue).. it’s just an excuse to get young teenagers into the theaters.

Unless I get in the mood for a rant, I won’t be seeing this one in theaters.

A second picture is after the break.

Things to add to your Netflix queue

Once again it’s Monday, so let’s see what Netflix has in store for us this week.

The Comebacks - This is another spoof movie, this one pokes fun at inspiration sports movies. On a week where Meet the Spartans just beat Rambo at the box office, this is a suitable release.

King of California - Don’t let the 3 star rating fool you, I really enjoyed this movie. Read my review for details.

The Invasion - It would take a lot to make me watch this one again.. yeck!

The King of Kong - Now this is more like it! We loved this one during it’s limited release and I’ll be watching it on DVD this week for certain. Also check out the MFG interview with Seth Gordon, the director of The King of Kong.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Vol. 5 - It’s Meatwad, Frylock and Master Shake! Do you really need any other reason to pop this one in your queue?

That’s a reasonable selection for this week, and some good stuff to have around the house for next weekend when your buddies are over for the big game.

Wrestling Week in Review for 1/21

Let me start off by apologizing for missing last weeks update, I seem to have contracted the plague or some variation of it and I’ve been down and out since early this week… But, I had plenty of time to catch up on TiVo and watch some Wrasslin’.

We’re about 30 hours away from the Royal Rumble and it’s shaping up to be a pretty decent PPV. The Rumble is my personal favorite PPV of the year… it used to be the Survivor Series but then they forgot to add Survivor Series matches, So I forgot to pay them $40 - Seemed to be a fair exchange to me.

Well since the last update there’s been 2 episodes of TNA, RAW, ECW and Smackdown and since it was a week before a major WWE PPV, I watched each show and I’ll touch on each and at the end I’ll add in some basic Wrestling knowledge for you guys to chew on. Now, without further adoodle-doo… Let’s get ready to Rumble! I really hate that phrase and the guy that says it but I thought it was appropriate under the circumstances. Read more

King of California has also arrived

King of California is the other movie to grace our mailbox today, and after reading the entire teaser line for Sex and Breakfast, I’m thinking King is the better choice.

King of CaliforniaOn the surface this may not sound that good:

“After spending several years in a mental institute Charlie (Michael Douglas) is sent home, reuniting with his teenage daughter Miranda (Evan Rachel Wood). Charlie becomes obsessed with the notion that a long-lost Spanish treasure is buried underneath their local suburban California Costco. Disconnected from reality and his daughter’s life, Charlie’s erratic behavior further strains their relationship and completely disrupts her peaceful existence.”

Sounds like teen angst and a fathe/daughter reconcilliation movie, but watch the trailer (embedded after the break) and I think you’ll see why I’m kinda looking forward to watching this. I like Michael Douglas, and this movie looks like it let’s him play a pretty funny character.

In any case, it comes out on DVD next Tuesday so I’ll make sure there’s a review on the mothership in time for you to make your purchase/rental decisions. More pictures (and the trailer) after the break.
